Gatwick airport’s report for December 2014 made for interesting reading.
Within was a look at handling agents employed by airlines and the time it took them to deliver passenger bags after landing. Small and medium sized aircraft were judged on their ability to deliver bags within 35 minutes of landing, whilst larger aircraft were given up to 50 minutes for the exercise.
For the month of October FlyBe was rated the top carrier in the small aircraft category, with 100% of its bags on 84 flights returned to the terminal within the allotted time. In this instance Menzies was the handler. Other airlines performing well were Aurigny (with 99%) from 176 flights; and Aer Lingus, which scored 98% based on a total of 283 flights. Again, Menzies was the handling agent employed. Ryanair, which contracts with Swissport, came close behind with 98% of bags on time from 231 flights.
In the large aircraft segment, Icelandair and Garuda Indonesia both scored 100% based on 28 and 22 flights respectively. Both these airlines employ Swissport for their handling requirements. Monarch Airlines ended up with 96% (on 360 flights): again, Swissport was the handler used. Finally, Emirates notched up 96% from 93 flights (with Aviator handling) whilst Vietnam Airlines followed with 95% from 20 flights handled by Swissport.
Amongst the small and medium-sized aircraft Royal Air Maroc, TAP Air Portugal, Air Southwest and Thomas Cook ended up at the bottom of the pile with 56%, 57%, 62% and 64% respectively. All these carriers were Aviator customers.
For the large aircraft category easyJet and Turkish Airlines, both served by Menzies, turned out to be the worst performers, with an 83% and 84% score respectively. Thomas Cook and Air Transit, looked after by Aviator, followed closely behind.
